А reader who is interested in architecture and is familiar with papers dealing with approaches to substantiating the rules of proportioning - which are applicable not only in architecture but in other spheres of creation as well - perhaps knows about the invention of a harmonic measuring ruler by a French architect Charles-Edouard Le Corbusier that he called the Modulor. That outstanding invention was highly appreciated long ago by many masters of architecture in the past century. However, in 1990 a monograph was published in the Soviet Union to become later a bibliographical rarity ("The Golden Section", I. Shevelev, M. Marutaev, I. Shmelev) where the author of the third part of the book investigated the Modulor from principally novel stands as compared to the views adhered to by the Modulor's creator.
The outcome was a new qualitative canonic scheme - the Binary Canon describing the proportions of both male and female human bodies, not just the male one, within a single methodological clue. It should be noted that nothing similar had ever been found before in any authentic historical sources.
The author of this edition is a well-known architect from Saint-Petersburg, the winner of the Russian Federation State Prize and International Prizes, Doctor of Arts Igor Pavlovich Shmelev, the inventor of a new mathematical apparatus (Spiraloid Duplex-Sphere - SDS), presents his method that he has called Duplex-Modulor. In the course of his non-trite analysis of the Modulor and its comparison with the Duplex-modulor, Dr. I. Shmelev introduces the reader into the systemic aspect, step by step eliminating explicit flaws of Le Corbusier's methodology. Basing on systemic approach the author comes to ponderable conclusions.

Igor Shmelev (1934-2020)
Igor P. Shmelev is a professional architect and a prizewinner of International and State prizes of Russia. For deciphering of a unique ancient Egyptian secret writing encoded in the panels of the Tomb of Hesi-Ra the author was awarded a degree. As the outcome of decoding the cryptography, Shmelev developed a fundamentally new topological apparatus and the idea of the Third Signal System based on it, revealing the natural mechanisms of the relationship of human mental functions with the surrounding space. According to the principle of the Third Signal System, the artificially created environment can provide and maintain the balance of environmental factor if its spatial parameters are subject to harmonic laws, expressed in the functions of the Golden section. The architect has many years of pedagogical activity in higher education and also successful architectural and construction practice. His interest lies in the field of cosmology, psychology, linguistics, and religion.
